After 18 years maybe I should change the oil in the differential :)
All you need is a 1/2 socket, 2 quarts gear oil, gasket and/or gasket sealant, drain pan, towels, gloves, light, scraper, wire brush, small hammer and chisel to break loose the cover.
Dont worry, I removed all remains of the old gasket.
The gears look great, no wear as from what I see.
Used a gear oil gasket maker sealant. I usually put a gasket, but I purchased the wrong size. If it leaks then I’ll buy the right gasket.
While waiting for the sealant to cure, I removed a shock absorber and yep it’s bad. I can compress it with one finger.
Oil is oil :)
Painted the cover silver. Should of painted the whole axle. Maybe when I change the shocks.

Nice! My AWD Passat has diff leaks in at least two spots, but getting to the fill plugs requires removing about half the exhaust system in very tight quarters.
So yeah, I’ve been putting it off.
For years.

I used Bilstein shocks on my S10 back when I had it. They worked well plus the yellow/blue peeking out from under the truck just looked cool.

A few years back I changed out the fluid in the diff in the 525i with Redline synthetic as part of routine maintenance. There wasn’t a problem before that, but within 10K miles I was hearing some serious whining coming from the diff. I don’t know if it was the fault of the fluid of the fact that it already had 220K miles, but I didn’t like the somewhat coincidental nature of that problem. Thankfully a friend had a wrecked car of the same year and same rare 5MT sitting in his back yard,so sourcing a replacement part was quite easy.

Recommend KYB Gas-Adjust shocks

Synthetic lube is great except when it isn’t, which is infrequent. Did you check the application to make sure you had the appropriate product?

Oh, they look cool. The one time I used them I didn’t like them. I thought they were too soft in the little movements and too harsh in the big movements. I’ve become a die-hard KYB user. GR-2/Excel G on passenger vehicles and Gas Adjust on pickups and vans.

Nor did it dampen his enthusiasm.

I have monroe shocks in the front. I’ll take a look at that brand too.

I don’t recall, TBH. It’s what was recommended by my usual parts supplier, a regular BMW nut (to thus day he still DDs an E34 540i M-Sport). Nothing fancy about my car (no LSD or anything like that) so I trusted his recommendation.

his car might have required gl-5 due to the LSD. According to wiki it may not be the ideal application in your 525 vs his m-sport.
